The origin of the Maori
Māori are the original people of New Zealand. Their ancestors were the first people to settle in New Zealand, arriving sometime between 1200 and 1300 AD.
In the 2018 New Zealand census, nearly 800,000 people living here were of Māori descent. That is about 16.5% of the population.
Maori culture
Maori culture is rich and varied. Indeed, it manifests itself through many arts such as dance, singing, sculpture or even tattoos. It is authentic and is passed on from generation to generation.
Maori tatoo
Ta Moko means tattoo art in Maori.
Every tatoo has its meaning, its history and a connection to its ancestors. Women wear the tattoo on their lips and chin unlike men who have tattoos all over their face. Maori wear their Moko with pride.
Some Maori tattoo the same tattoos as their grandparents or tattoos with personal meaning to allow Maori culture and history to continue through the years
The Haka
This war dance is composed of songs, strong movements and Pukana (grimaces, bulging eyes and sticking tongues). We know him from rugby, the All Blacks, who honor him before every match. Formerly used to impress their opponents, it is now more often used to welcome visitors, assert identity and convictions or honor performances.
To preserve the history of the Maori each school has its own Haka and practices it every morning
Racism
Despite the important place of the Maori in the breasts of New Zealand culture, the presence of 15% of Maori in the breasts of New Zealanders and the influence within the government that the Maoris. Racism is a present scourge and this racism is reflected among other things by the gap of 2.6 billion dollars per year between the Maori and the New Zealanders since the Maori are paid 140 dollars less per week than the New Zealanders
Conclusion
To conclude that the Maoris are at the very origin of New Zealanders, it is an increasingly rare population and it is important to preserve these origins and to keep their ancestral rhythms in order to preserve the memory of their ancestors. Even though racism and inequality are present, we hope that its problems will go away and that Maori will continue to be recognized.
Thanks!
