A student studying opression around the world
Genocide
Many lost their close relatives, and people still have scarring memories of the dark time in Rwanda. No outside country came to help during this period. Even many years after the Holocaust, people have not learned from history. When history repeats itself, society as a whole has made a mistake.
Rwanda
In 1994, after two ethnic groups clashed, around 800,000 people died. The Hutus overthrew the Tutsis, and many people who lived in Rwanda were instructed to kill their neighbors and family.
Holocaust
The Holocaust is one of the most well known genocides in history. It was a systematic murder of 6,000,000 Jews led by the Nazis and Adolf Hitler. Hitler first dehumanized Jews and undesirables, making them live in ghettos, making them wear the Star of David. However, as time went on, they were sent to concentration camps where they were killed.

action. He killed many people through concentration camps. Jews were harassed on the streets. Anyone who stood up against the government would also be punished. Jews also thought that everything would get better. Even when they were in concentration camps, they thought it was not over. However, at the end of the Golocaust, there were 11 million deaths.
Genocide
Holocaust
Adolf Hitler wanted everyone to be of the Aryan race. They were the perfect race, and anyone who didn't fall under that category was supposed to be executed. When the Nazi regime came to power, Hitler put his plan in
Genocide
Rwanda
When the Hutu leader died from a plane crash, the Hutu group used it as an excuse to kill the Tutsis. Over a span of 100 days, 800,000 people were killed. The militia was sent to slaughter people. Localmen slaugtered their family.
The UN did not have an order to stop the fighting, so nothing was done. The impact of this genocide is still present in Rwanda.
Psychology of Genocide
What is going on in the minds of people who carry out genocide?
As humans, we see everything in a heirarchial order. We see God, then humans, then animals, etc. However, people who carry out genocide believe that some beings that are in the people category do not belong there. They believe that they are do not really have "human essence". Now in science, none of this makes sense. However, in the mind of a person who carries out genocide, that is the reason for mass murder.
Refugees
Cuba
Since the American Navy has some area in Cuba, the people trying to flee the country come back to where they begun their journey - in Cuba. Many people have successfully come to America though. These people may have had to leave their family behind, but they chose freedom over family.
People in Cuba are fleeing from their government. The Cuban government restricts people's rights. Although their Constitution says they have Freedom of Speech, etc. they are not allowed to speak out against the government. They are also not allowed to leave the country. Many people build rafts to leave and go to America.
Civil Rights
Segregation in America
In America, Africans were used as slaves. After eradicating slavery, people still did not believe that African Americans should be treated the same as white Americans. They kept them away from whites using a principle called "seperate but equal". For example, there would be two different water fountains of the same quality, but one was for whites and one was for blacks. In reality however, the facilities were far from equal.
Oppression Around the World
Venezuela
Without proper medical care, the infant and matarnity mortality rates are going up. People who visit hospitals are only provided a bed, materess, and doctors. They have to go find everything else themselves. Most people buy medicine off the black market, but this has no gaurentee and is often very expensive. This oppresion is major problem that can be solved if other countries get involved and help.
In Venezuela, getting a bag of flour can be just as hard as climbing Mount Everest. There are long lines to go into the store, and when you do go into the store, most of the flour is gone. Now imagine getting medicine at a place like this. Just as you probably imagined - it is impossible. The Venezuelan government is not getting help from other nations. When they recieved a charter, the president simply said "We are Venezuelans!". They might be Venezuelans, but bacteria and harmful diseases are much, much stronger.

Editor's Note
Dear Readers, This learning experience has taught me something about humans. We do not learn from our past. The suffering and struggling of so many people worldwide is neglected by many people today. I want to make people aware of all the struggles in society today. I do not want to stand around and watch people hurt each other. Instead, I want to live in a world where people see each other as people, not as threats to society. Hopefully after reading about some of the struggles face in the world today, you feel this way too. If we come together, we can solve any problem in the world. Whether it is saving refugees in Cuba or helping people live in Venezuela, we can make a difference.Thank you for reading today! Aparna Balaji, Editor in Chief
