CONCLUSION
Missy Elliott
Hip Hop is generally considered as a subculture, and it can be true if we believe that all the artists who intiated the movement are now part of the mainstream culture. However, the concept of a counterculture seems more appropriate as the hip hop movement was born in an environment where people felt neglected, left outside any form of social and political life as they were scorned by politicians, harassed by the police and forgotten in their destitute neighbourhoods. Consequently, hip hop acheived what no other musical movement had achieved before, it became a real counter-power, raising awareness of silent minorities' living conditions, thus changing the lives of thousands of African Americans and people of colour by giving them a voice and a message that finally got heard.
