Shimmel's Arrival
Scene: Waterfront, New York City - Shimmel arrives, walks across the stage, carrying a battered suitcase - passes Cornelius, he sits behind his pushcart, holding a newspaper, shouting "Bananas" - Shimmel speaks to him and starts the conversation
Cornelius Welcome
He describes America as a wonderful and marvelous place.A place where you can achieve everything. But you have to start your own business and must take an American name. His conversation with Shimmel starts rude but from a second to another he seems to be polite

- Shimmel is a Immigrant from Kovno-Vilna Russia - He arrives in New York City one day after Cornelius - First he doesn't want to change his name but does it later in the play - He comes to America to build a business and starts one by buying the Banana pushcart - He changes his name in addition to his feelings for her - With the new name he feels more powerful and as if he could achieve everything - He pretends to be in the film industry so Maggie falls in love with him - In the end both of the really decide to try it in this industry

(Elias Crapavarnishkes)
- Cornelius J. Holingsworth is a Jewish immigrant from Russia - He immigrated from Minsk-Pinsk to New York and now sells bananas - He is unsympathetic and rude in first place but changes his personality to a polite on after some time - this makes him seem two-faced and hypocritical - He sells his pushcart to Shitzman but right afterwards sells bananas again - in the end it seems
Timeline
- Then the flower selling Maggie joins them - Shimmel falls in love with her immediately, but she shows no interest
- Shimmel arrives in America and meets Cornelius - Cornelius sells his pushcart to Shimmel and tries to sell him a new name
- When Shimmel took over the business, Cornelius still sells bananas on the same street - both become partners
- Samuel now appears very self-confident and uses tricks to convince Maggie to fall in love with him - in the end, both of them really intend to get into the film business
- Cornelius pretends to be a producer, wich makes Maggie interested in him - Frustrated, Shimmel buys a new name with wich he feels like he can achieve anything
Conclusion
The Play shows the change of people's characteristics.In the beginning, Shimmel is a honest person but by spending some time with Cornelius he changes and uses tricks to get what he wants. This characteristic changes are also influenced by the chase after a dream, the American dream.
