ALKYNES
Fun Facts
Structure of an Alkyne
Examples
Physical Properties
Naming Rules
- Alkynes were first discovered by Irish chemist Edmund Davy
- Alkynes are found in: Histrionicotoxin (used by frogs as protection)
- Its also found in birth control pills in the ingredients Norethindrone and Ethinylesteradiol
- The suffix is "yne"
- Number the chain of carbons that contain the triple bond so that it has the lowest position possible
- Both double and triple bonds are considered priority and the one closest to the end determines the direction of counting
- If both bonds have the same position number, the double bond should come first
- Subsituents are added to the name as prefixes
- High priority substituents are located on the same or opposite sides of the bond
- If the compound is cyclic, the information is noted and the term "cyclo" is added
- Designate geometrical isomers with cis, trans or E, Z prefixes
- An "e" is dropped if the following letter is a vowel and an "a" is added if inclusion of di, tri, etc. results to cononants consecutively
- Generally odourless
- Melting and Boiling Point: COMPARED TO ALKENES AND ALKANES THEY HAVE SLIGHTLY HIGHER BOILING POINTS
- Polarity: NON POLAR
- Solubility: DISSOLVE IN ORGANIC SOLVENTS,SLIGHT SOLUBILITY IN POLAR SOLVENTS AND DO NOT DISSOLVE IN WATER
- Density: LESS DENSE THAN WATER
