(Affirmative)
The choice between the phrases there is and there are at the beginning of a sentence is determined by the noun that follows it.
Use there is when the following noun is singular.
Use there are when the following noun is plural.
Examples:

- There are monsters on your closet!
- There are two windows in your room.
- There are books on your desk.
- There is a monster on your closet!
- There is a lamp on your night table.
- There is a book on the desk.
THERE IS / there are
(Negative)
To say that something DOESN'T exist.
The negative is formed by putting not after is or are:
Examples:
There is not a dog in the house. There is not a tree in the garden. There are not five candles in the table. There are not any magazines in the office.
Contractions:
When we want to indicate that a zero quantity of something exists we use there aren't any.
The contraction of there is is there's.
-There's a good song on the radio. The contraction of there are is there aren't. -There aren't any trees in my street

(Interrogative)
To form a question we place is / are in front of there
Again we use any with plural questions or those which use uncountable nouns.
- We also use there is / are in short answers.
Examples:
Is there a dog in the beach house? - No, there isn't.
Are there any dogs in the park? - Yes, there are.
