In America, they were sold and brought by white traders at public auctions. In the North, slaves usually worked in small farms. In the South, slaves worked in plantations, in tobacco or cotton fields. Slaves were sometimes beaten or whipped by their masters and they were forced to work from sunrise to sunset.
