The first slaves were brought to America in 1619. African families were captured in their villages and they were carried in dirty ships across the Atlantic Ocean. Many slaves died during the trip. In America, they were sold and brought by white traders at public auctions. In the North, slaves usually worked in small farms. In the South, slaves worked in plantations, in tobacco or cotton fields. Slaves were sometimes beaten or whipped by their masters and they were forced to work from sunrise to sunset.
