Test of English as a Foreign Language is a standardized test to measure the English language ability of non-native speakers wishing to enroll in English-speaking universities. The test is accepted by many English-speaking academic and professional institutions. TOEFL is one of the two major English-language tests in the world, the other being the IELTS.

What is the difference
IELTS listening
- Timing:
- Approximately 30 minutes (plus 10 minutes transfer time)
- There are 40 questions.
- There are 4 sections
- Section 1 is a conversation between 2 people set in an everyday social context.
- Section 2 is a monologue set in an everyday social context
- Section 3 is a conversation between up to 4 people set in an educational or training context
- Section 4 is a monologue on an academic subject
IELTS listening
Each section is heard once only. Skills assessed:
- Understanding of main ideas
- Understanding of specific factual information
- Recognizing opinions, attitudes and purpose of a speaker
- Following the development of an argument
- Each correct answer receives 1 mark. Scores out of 40 and converted to the IELTS 9-band scale.

- 60 minutes (no extra transfer time)
- There are 40 questions.
- Multiple choice, identifying information (True/False/Not Given), identifying a writer’s views/claims (Yes/No/Not Given), matching information, matching headings, features, sentence endings, sentence completion, summary completion, note completion, table completion, flow-chart completion, diagram label completion, short-answer questions.

- There are 3 sections the total text length is 2150-2750 words.
- Academic Reading:
- Each section contains one long text. Texts are authentic and are taken from books, journals, magazines and newspapers.
- General Training Reading:
- Section 1 contains 2 or 3 short factual texts, one of which may be composite. Topics are relevant to everyday life.
- Section 2 contains 2 short factual texts focusing on work-related issues.
- Section 3 contains 2 one longer, more complex text on a topic of general interest.

- Reading for detail
- Understanding inferences and implied meaning
- Recognizing writer’s opinions, attitudes and purpose

IELTS writing
Timing: 60 minutes There are 2 tasks. You are required to write at least 150 words for Task 1 and at least 250 words for Task 2 Academic Writing In Task 1, you are presented with a graph, table, chart or diagram and are asked to describe, summarize or explain the information in your own words. In Task 2, you are asked to write an essay in response to a point of view, argument or problem.

Skills assessed: In both tasks you are assessed on your ability to write a response which is appropriate in terms of: Content The organization of ideas The accuracy and range of vocabulary and grammar
General Training Writing In Task 1, you are presented with situation and are asked to write a letter requesting information or explaining the situation. The letter may be personal or semi-formal/neutral in style In Task 2, you are asked to write an essay in response to a point of view, argument or problem.

TOEFL reading
Read 3-5 texts of about 700 words, then answer 12-15 questions per text. You will have 20 minutes to read each text. There are 10 different types of questions. They are usually presented as multiple choice questions. Timing: 60-100 minutes Marking30 points

Listen to 6-9 recordings, then answer 5/6 questions per recording. 2-3 conversations, (each lasting from 2-3min) in a university setting, between a student and a professor (or someone from the university staff) Then answer 5 questions 2-3 lectures (each lasting from 4-5min), on an academic topic held by a professor with students interrupting. Then answer 6 questions. 2-3 lectures (each lasting from 4-5min) on an academic topic held by a professor with no interruptions. Then answer 6 questions.
TOEFL listening
Topics: conversations address common themes of academic life, mainly associating a student and professor, a librarian or a university staff member. Lectures are about academic topics taught at university: science, history, social sciences, art… Timing: 60-90 minutes Marking 30 points
TOEFL speaking
Talk about 6 familiar and academic topics: Talk about a familiar topic for 45 seconds Express and defend your opinion for 45 seconds Give a 1-minute summary of a text on the subject of university life (about 100 words) and of a conversation (about 1 min) on the same topic Give a 1-minute summary of an academic text (about 110 words) and of a lecture (about 1 min 15) on the same topic In 1 minute, give a summary and your opinion about a conversation between students (which lasts about 1min 45) Give a summary of a lecture on an academic topic (about 1 min 45)

Themes, materials and topics: Exercise 1: you will be asked to describe a well-known situation, giving personal examples. Examples: what is your favorite day of the year and why? Use details and examples to support your answer. Timing: 20 minutes Marking 30 points
Write 2 essays: Summarize an academic text of about 260 words and a lecture on the same topic. Write an essay on an everyday topic (300 words). Timing: 50 minutes Marking 30 points
