How is friendship represented in fiction ?

Introduction
"The friend is sometimes closer than a brother." -The Bible- This quote makes us reflect on the type of bond we share with our friends, brothers or sisters and how we experience it. This link we all share has inspired some authors, artists and they have therefore decided to represent their different visions of this particular link through their works. The three first documents come from a play, a series and a book which show us relations between two best friends. The last one is a poem written by Emilie Bront in 1839, who gives us a comparaison between love and friendship and her opinion about both of topics. Generally, the four documents are focused on the strengh of friendship, and the bond that unite a meeting of two people. How is friendship represented in fiction ? First, documents show that friendship can be comparable to a couple, which for the time of their publication was new and surprinsing. But friendship in these documents is also represented as stronger and more lasting than love.
I/ Friendship comparable to a couple
In the three first documents Friendship is represented by two best friends, who like a couple. Indeed, in Wilde's play, friendship between Algernon and Jack is very close for that time. In their first exchange, we immediately notice their complicity. They call each other "My dear fellow" or "old boy", give themselves nicknames, like "Algy", for Algernon. Plus, at the beginning of the extract, Jack comes unexpetedly at Algernon's hom, as if it were a habit since it does not surprise Algernon. Moreover, they exchange all their secrets, they tell each other everything. Thus, both are awarefor their imaginary friends and the double life they lead. (Algernon is initially upset that his friend did not say anything to him earlier). They also help each other to escape from boring situtations. Moreover, in the series Friends, Joe and Chandler are flatmate and used to doing everything together, except since Joey moved out, and Chandler has a new flatmate. The episode makes us laugh because they argue like a couple, blame themselves for banalities, without daring to say that they miss each other. In paralled, they are also asking their other friends for advice. Plus, Joey plays the stereotypical role of the boy who betrayed while Chandler is the stereotypical girl who is in pain and moody. They seem to have a break-up, but the characters act as completely lost without each other. Then we can say their is a "Bromance" (Brother + Romance), which mean that two man stick up for each other, trust each other and act as supportive fans of each other. Then, we can see the same duo in the movie Thelma and Louise. The whole film is based on their strong friendship that unites them and the journey they decide to undertake to escape the pressure of the husband of Thelma. At the final scene of the movie they have to do an ultimate choice, between get caught by the police or die together. They hold hands and kiss before taking the last jump. Faced with this impasse, after all the time spent together, they decide to die together, and stay together until the end no matter what happens.
II/ Friendship stronger than love
We can see that in the documents presented, friendship is represented more strongly than love. Indeed, in her poem, Emilie Bronte compares love and friendship. Thus, love is represented as an ephemeral rose-briar, while friendship as a holly-tree, symbolizing everlasting and the constant presence of friends. She therefore thinks that friendship is stronger and more eternal than love. We can guess that she thinks so because of her family situation, where she knew only the friendship of her two others sisters, and whose mother died young, as well as her brother who was not a good example for her (he was addicted to drink and drugs), she kept a better vision of friendship. Moreover, in each documents, it is the strength of friendship that is emphasized and not love. Thus, we discover the friendship of Jack and Algernon before that of the love between Jack and Gwendolen, especially since the vision of marriage by the two characters is very trivial. Algernon says for exemple: "The only way to behave to a woman is to make love to her, if she is pretty, and to someone else if she is pain". It is also from this friendship that follows the plot of the play. In addition, in the movie Thelma and Louise, love is portrayed negatively as Thelma tries to escape her husband’s grip. All the movie is based around their friendship, and in the final scene, Thelma and Louise make the decision to die together, between friends. Also in the serie friend, the episode is around the friendship and their "break-up"between Joey and Chandler.
Conclusion
To conclude, these documents show us that in fictions, in general, friendship is represented to us as a strong bond between two people, who stick up for each other and who can act as a couple, like Jack and Algrnon, Joey and Chandler or Thelma and Louise. It is important to know that representing a friendship as such was new at the time. Moreover we can see that friendship is represented stronger than love, mainly through the poem "Love and Friendship" by Emilie Bronte. This theme "meeting people" allows to see firsts representation of friendship by authors in their works, what type of bond unite them. This is an alliance between two people often very different, who find in each other what is lacking in each other. It allows to questions us about the importance of a strong friendship. Lastly friendship is still found and represented everywhere in fictions, between many characters, at all times. Like Sherlock Holmes and Watson, Frodo and Samwise in "The Lord Of The Ring" or also Woody and Buzz in " Toys Story" So we can also ask ourselves if friendship is the only bond that can unite two characters ?
