A SHIFT IN DESIGN--NOT MORE

Another initiative can feel like just another overwhelming thing on very full plates. Honestly, our platters are overflowing. UDL is not a new initiative.. It's embracing variability. UDL is all about removing barriers, offering choices and options that will improve teaching & instruction that will ultimately lead to better outcomes for our students. It's a design element in your instructional process.

Benefits for Teachers

Students can review material through various representation after the initial instruction--aids those with poor working memory

Proactive design meets the needs of a diverse population/ gifted or fast finishers and those needing instructional support

Increases student engagement in all settings--in classroom at livestreaming

Incorporate ISTE standards/develop mutiple standards at once

Evaluate the Barriers That May Exist in Your Students

Sensory or physical disabilities. Emotional or behavioral challenges. Learning disabilities or reading difficulties. Autism spectrum disorders. Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. Lack of appropriate background knowledge. English-language barriers.

4 Pathways to UDL Design

Customized Pathways

Choice Boards

Students skip parts of the pathway if they are proficient in that standard.

Hyperdocs/Playlists

Can Do/Must Do

There are examples for all 4 pathways here

CREATE AN EFFECTIVE PLAYLIST

Learners are presented with a series of tasks that they complete in any order they want. Personalization occurs through path and pace. The goal is to use time more effectively while developing a more equitable learning experience for all kids.

Playlists were a new term for me. Click the title for an active link to find an explanation.

Sound TRAP

  • Students loved
  • Authentic reason for writing/motivating
  • Meets speaking and listening standards
  • Avenue for expression/showcase of knowledge
  • Students less inhibited than with video
  • Reflect and rerecord

First experience with Podcasting

  • I wasn't using an educator account/only free for 30 days
  • Need a quiet place to record
  • limited loops
