Formation of fossil fuels

Coal, oil and natural gas are all examples of fossil fuels. They are formed in the ground from dead vegetation or tiny creatures by a process which takes millinons of years.

THE AFFECTS ON THE ENVIRONMENT

Carbon Dioxide

Sulphur

Carbon Dioxide is a greenhouse gas. Burning coal releases more carbon dioxide into the atmosphere than any other non-renewable resource. Natural gas is the fossil fuel that produces the least carbon dioxide.

Most types of coal and oil contain sulphur and when they are burned that sulphur becomes sulphur dioxide, which when combined with water creates acid rain, which causes serious damage to people, plants and buildings.

HOW to avoid the Affects

Carbon Dioxide

Sulphur

Scientist have not yet found a way to avoid the release of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere when fossil fuels are burned, but its important to mention that many industries have started researching ways of capturing and storing it under the earths surface.

It is possible for sulphur to be removed from fossil fuels but that would increase the cost of the energy produced. Another possibility is to remove sulphur dioxide from the waste gases when the fuel is burned, but this would also increase the cost. But agreements are forcing companies that emit large quantities of sulphur dioxide to clean up their waste gases and thus acid rains are no longer a problem in Europe, but they are still a problem in many developing countries.

Products made by Fossil fuels

Fossil fuels are provided with valuable chemicals that can be used in the manufacture of useful products.

Some products made by fossil fuels are:

  • Shampoo
  • Contact lenses
  • Shaving Cream
  • Toothpaste
  • Perfume
