HistoryEarly years of Méthode NaturelleGeorges Hébert (1875-1957) was an officer in the French Navy and the founder of the Méthode Naturelle, a method of physical education. Georges Hebert was born in 1875 into the family of a bookseller. From childhood, Hebert had access to colonial literature on adventure and travel, which impressed him much and ultimately influenced his career choice. At the age of 18, Hebert joined a naval school. Inspirations In the navy, Hebert navigated South and North America’s seas and the Antilles until 1903. Hebert’s first inspiration were topmen at sailing ships, exceptionally athletic and resistant. During his journeys, he admires native people as swimmers, divers, runners, and javelin throwers. Strong and elegant female coal bearers in Martinique influenced Hebert’s later dedication to the physical education of women. Hebert witnessed the Spanish-American War of 1898 and South American revolutions and rebellions in Cuba, Uruguay, Venezuela and Columbia. Hebert was impressed by the performance, agility, instinct, and elegance of native inhabitants, partisans and guerrillas. Their superiority over troops and athletes trained in European or American ways convince Hebert of the need for reform in physical education. For Hebert, the education of children and sports teachers becomes more important than athlete training. He welcomes groups of girls, boy scouts, and children from a local hospice in the college. Soon, all schools in Reims introduce Methode Naturelle in the physical education of their 10,000 pupils. Hebert trains over 50 school sports teachers and 15 female teachers for the city of Reims. Children are enthusiastic about the end of the dull gymnastics. Instead of the rigid arm and leg movements, they are allowed to run in the gardens, climb ropes and jump like frogs. DecayThe influence of Hebertism started to fade in 1950-60es. The military training underwent reform, physical education now followed a new goal – to prepare young athletes for the Olympic Games. Modern comebackAt the beginning of the new century David Belle and his friends made the teachings of Georges Hébert famous to many traceures all over the world – as the origin of Parkour. Modern civil obstacle runs such as Tough Mudder, Spartan Race, Tough Guy Race & Co as well as military training all over the world take place on obstacle courses and parcours, which were first introduced and designed by Hébert. Due to the actual trend of ‘outdoor fitness’ the public’s attention to Méthode Naturelle is rising again. ¿Quieres hacer contenidos tan geniales como

PhilosophyMéthode Naturelle, also known as the Natural Method or Hébertisme, a methodology of physical education to achieve integral development by the use of natural movement. It was essentially developed at the beginning of the 20th century by the French naval officer Georges Hébert The philosophy, or the doctrine of Methode Naturelle, summarizes its underlying ideas. They explain the essence of the method and largely determine its difference from other physical education methods, as well as from sport and fitness. Concept outlineA man who lives in natural conditions has to get food, escape from danger, and defend himself against enemies. Daily useful and natural movements that correspond to the human body’s structure and vital needs lead to holistic physical development. Civilization protects us from natural challenges and risks. It also reduces the amount of our daily workload or makes it one-sided. However, the need for a holistic movement in our bodies remains the same as millions of years ago. The founder of the natural method, Georges Hebert, believed that a person should receive a daily dose of exercise equivalent to the activity in the natural environment. Since the time for training is limited, we must use it effectively and proceed methodically. Hebert developed teaching about effective physical education and called it “Methode Naturelle.” Heberts methodology aims to develop maximum physical potential in an individuum through natural and useful movements, improve their health and stress tolerance, and teach them to be helpful and safely handle dangerous situations.

Now we can say that you are really good youtubers. So it is time to demostrate your oral skills again by explaining a physical exercise to develope your strength using natural resources. To create it, you can find some ideas on the videos or on the brain storming I gave you. Go ahead ;)

Here I will tell you the date you will explain your activity for the rest of the members of the class in order to put it into practice.

Here you will find the rubric to evaluate you at this content

Être fort pour être utileÊtre fort pour être utile – or Be strong to be useful – is the motto of Methode Naturelle. Georges Hebért made this idea a guiding principle of his training method after he led a rescue operation during a volcanic eruption at Martinique. The goals of the training reflect this motivation. In sports, you want to perform or measure yourself against others; in fitness, you pursue aesthetic or health goals. However, “people do not originally run for the sake of running, but because they need to hunt prey or flee from an enemy,” said Hebert. Method Natural Athletes, therefore, get strong to be able to help others and themselves. Firefighters and lifeguards live this idea in their work every day. For casual athletes, the forms of training correspond to that goal as well. They learn and practice:

  • Carrying a person (to be able to transport an injured person in safety)
  • Throwing objects of different shapes (to throw a life ring or a lifebuoy)
  • Sprints with unprepared starts from different positions (to escape an immediate danger)
  • Quadrupedal movement (to escape from a building full of smoke)
  • To transport a person from the water on land (to help a drowning person)
  • Climbing over walls (to save yourself from an aggressive dog)
  • To defend themselves (to act appropriately in case of an attack)

They clean up their local beach or their training spot, donate blood, or do volunteer work.
