Grammatik: The dative case

When you want to say that you live in a town or village, you use the preposition in, for example:

• in einem Vorort (in a suburb)
• in einer Stadt (in a town/city)
• in einem Dorf (in a village)

Grammatik: The dative case

The prepositions auf (on) and an (at) also take the dative case:

• an der Küste (on the coast)
• auf dem Land (in the countryside)
• an dem Meer (by the sea)

*an + dem = am (e.g. am Meer)

This depends on whether your noun is masculine, feminine, neuter or plural...
