DEFINING RELATIVE CLAUSES

They give necessary information, essential to the meaning of a clause. - no commas; -relative adverbs and prepositions can be omitted in certain cases; - you can use "that";

Defining relative clauses examples.

I met a woman who/that was from Japan.

Rockall is an island which/that lies near Scotland. ​ Ann stopped the car which/that was driving past. ​ I bought a present (which/that) we would give Susan for Christmas. ​

I bought a jacket which/that was really expensive.

I saw a friend (who/whom/that) I hadn't seen for years.

The beach is the place where she loves spending time. The house (which/that) he was born in has been demolished.

That was the year (when/that) she graduated.​ The reason (why/that) she left her job was that she didn't get on with her boss.
