The United Kingdom

THE UNITED KINGDOM The UK is a nation made up of four countries: England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. England, Scotland and Wales are the countries of the big island, Great Britain. Northern Ireland is in the north of the island of Ireland. People who live in the Uk are called British. In the UK, the weather changes a lot. It is never very hot or very cold but rain is always a possibility. England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland have their own identity, their capital city and their culture. Each country in the UK also has a First Minister and a parliament that can make laws valid only to their specific country , but they share a language (English) , currency (pound), the central government in London and the King as head of state.

Edimburgh is the capital of Scotland. It has a population of over 5 million people. People from Scotland are called Scottish. Scotland is divided into three parts - the Highlands, the Lowlands, and 790 islands! Most people live in the Lowlands, in the South where there are the two main cities , Edimburgh and Glasgow Scotland is famous for its amazing scenery , culture and history. People visit Scotland for its castles, lochs and mountains, and also its lively cities.

England is the largest country in the United Kingdom (UK) and also the most populated. It has a population of over 55 million people. People from England are called English. London is the capital of England and of the United Kingdom. In the north there are the most important mountains, the Pennines. The countryside is full of small farms and villages but there are also lots of big cities like Manchester, Birmingham and Newcastle. In England there are also two of the best universities in the world, the universities of Oxford and Cambridge.

Cardiff is the capital city of Wales. Wales has got a population of about 3 million people. People from Wales are called Welsh. There are 2 official languages in Wales - English and Welsh, an ancient Celtic language. It is a country full of history ,wonderful scenery and ancient castles. The Severn (354km), the longest rivers in the UK, flows from Wales to the sea near Bristol, in England.

Ireland is a fantastic island but it is a divided country : Northern Ireland is part of the United Kingdom while the Republic of Ireland is an indipendent country. People from Northern Ireland are called Northern Irish. The capital city of Northern Ireland is Belfast. It has a population of almost 2 million people. Lough Neagh is the biggest lake in the UK.

Borders The English Channel separates Great Britain and France. To the east of Britain is the North Sea and to the west the Irish Sea.To the west of Scotland and Ireland is the Atlantic Ocean.

The King

Charles III became king of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland after the death of his mother, Queen Elizabeth II, on September 8, 2022. He was the eldest son of Queen Elizabeth and held the title prince of Wales from 1958 until her death. His father was Prince Philip, duke of Edimburgh. King Charles has got a sister, Anne, and two brothers, Andrew and Edward. In 1981 Prince Charles married Lady Diana Spencer.Charles and Diana divorced in 1996 . Diana died in a car accident in 1997. In 2005 Charles married Camilla Parker Bowles. King Charles has got two children, Prince William(born 1982) and Prince Harry (born 1984). . Charles has got 5 grandchildren. He loves sport, especially polo, which he played as a young man. He likes skiing, fishing, and painting, and he is interested in architecture, the countryside, and organic farming. He supports many charities, which raise money for good causes. The most famous of these is The Prince’s Trust.
