THE LAND DOWN UNDER
Australia is located in the Southern hemisphere and is situated below Asia. That is why Australia's nickname is "The Land Down Under". The most famous and most densely populated city is Sydney but the capital city is Canberra. Australia is an extraordinary, unique and very unusual country. First of all, it is a country, an island AND a continent at the same time! Australia is the only continent that is also an island. It is the 6th largest country in the world. It is the smallest of the 7 continents and is entirely surrounded by water. More than two thirds of the country is desert and called "the Outback". There are about 24 million inhabitants in Australia and 85% of the population lives in big cities.
Since Australia is in the Southern hemisphere and France is in the Northern hemisphere the seasons are reversed : when it is winter in France, it is summer in Australia.
