Vatican City

The smallest country in the world

View some interesting facts about this tiny country!

  • This country covers only about 100 acres, making it just 1/8 the size of New York's Central Park
  • There is a population of just 825 people, as of 2019
  • For nearly 60 years in the 1800s and 1900s, popes refused to leave the Vatican.

Landmarks

Check out some of the Vatican's most famous landmarks and Tourist sights!

Vatican City Flag explanation

Vatican Coat of Arms lies above a gold and silver key. The gold key represents spirtual power, and silver represents worldly power.

Vatican Political System

Is governed as an absolute monarchy with the pope at its head. The Vatican mints its own euros, prints its own stamps, issues passports and license plates, operates media outlets and has its own flag and anthem. One government function it lacks: taxation.

Religion

Take a guess

I feel as if I don't really have to explain the religion to you, but it is fairly obvious. If you are truly not sure, the religion is strictly Roman Catholic, as you could guess from the image and constant mentioning of the Pope. Being the home of the pope, the population is 100% catholic.

Current Event

Pope Francis Aims to Cut Down on corruption among Vatican Managers

Pope Francis issued tough new anti-corruption regulations Thursday (April 22) that require Vatican cardinals and managers to periodically declare they are investing only in funds consistent with Catholic doctrine and aren't under criminal investigation or stashing money in tax havens.

Traditions

Electing the Pope

The highly secretive, centuries-old process by which a new pope is elected is known as the papal conclave. During the conclave, the top officials at the Catholic Church, known collectively as the College of Cardinals, are called together to decide who to appoint to the church’s top post.

Food

Food in Vatican City is largely Italian fare, consisting of various pasta, polenta, and risotto dishes. Visitors can start their meal with an antipasto, or appetizer, followed by a small first course and a second main course.

Quiz Time!

  • Who is the current pope?
  • Does the Vatican have its own Army?
  • What do the colors of the flag represent?

Quince Paste

(Pie)

Quince Pie. The paste can be, and often is put into pies to make a delightful treat. This is what we will be eating today, at least the closest alternative we could acquire within out miniscule budget.

The quince is a fruit without any members in its respective family. It is a tree fruit that bears a fruit similar in appearance to a pear, and is bright golden-yellow when mature. The raw fruit is a source of food.
