A: However, he only had enough money to pay for the passage to America for four of his family. Matthew, Julia and the two oldest children would go first and Annie and her two younger sisters would stay in Ireland with relatives. Two years passed. In the meantime, Annie waited and hoped, that her family would find a way to send for them.

B: Finally, on January 1, 1892 the boat sailed into New York harbor. Nobody knows how Annie came to be the first person off that ship today, but she was. Immediately, she was greeted by an immigration employee who welcomed her to Ellis Island. After that, he gave her a ten dollar gold piece, because she was the first person to use the new immigration facilities. Annie was amazed to be given more money all at once, than she had ever seen in her life before, and the present was all the more precious because it was her 15th birthday. Soon afterwards, she and her brothers were reunited with their parents.

C:Eventually, in 1888 Matthew was forced to make the difficult decision to leave his home and try to find a better life for himself and his family in America.

D: Annie Moore's life began in the village of Cobh near Cork in Ireland. In the 19th century, a series of famines caused many Irish people to flee to other countries, and many went to America. Those who stayed tried to survive in a country where both food and jobs were hard to find. Meanwhile, Annie's parents, Matthew and Julia Moore, tried to make a life in the country they loved. Although times were hard, Julia had five children.

E: At last, the much- hoped- for letter arrived. It contained the fare for Annie and her brothers to travel to America. The children boarded the S.S. Nevada, which set sail on Dec 20, 1891 for New York harbor. Many people were seasick, but Annie and her brothers survived.

Well done! But how did you know the correct order?

Apart from the information in the text, there were words and phrases that helped you ordering the paragraphs. These are called sentence adverbs. They are used to connect and structure ideas (e.g. at the beginning, finally,...)They are usually followed by a comma before the main sentence starts.

Find at least 5 examples of sentence adverbs in the text about Annie (p.64-65) Note them down on a sheet of paper. DO NOT CHEAT 😎

Now, add the information about Annie to the ones taken from the song.

Well done 😎
