traditions

One of the best-known traditions is that the Nativity scene, representing the Virgin Mary, Joseph, Jesus and the animals in the stable is represented on a "human" scale in front of the porches of houses and churches, but also in shopping centers and public places. In some provinces, on Christmas Eve, some villagers disguise themselves to create a reconstruction of the crib and organize "living cribs". This Christmas tradition is also borrowed from the Spanish. It is called "Panunuluyan" and it is one of the flagship Christmas events!

Decorations

the 'parol' is a bamboo pole or frame with a lighted star lantern on it. It's traditionally made from bamboo strips and colored with Japanese paper or cellophane paper and represents the star that guided the Wise Men. It is the most popular Christmas decoration in the Philippines.

christmas eve

Christmas Eve is very important in the Philippines. Lots of people stay awake all night until Christmas Day! During the evening of Christmas Eve, Christians go to church to hear the last mass on Christmas Eve. This is followed by a midnight feast, called Noche Buena.

The Noche Buena is a big open day, a celebration with family, friends and neighbors who come to wish everyone a Merry Christmas! Most households had multiple dishes and would normally include: lechon (roast pork), ham, fruit salad, rice cakes ,bibingkas and others sweets. , steamed rice and many types of drinks.
