Past simple: Irregular verbs
Many verbs are irregular. This means that the past simple form is different, they don't have the usual -ed ending. go - went see - saw eat - ate think - thought The verb form is the same for all persons (I, you, she, he, it, we, they). She was afraid The meal began with soup Everyone came to my house for the weekend The birds ate all of the bread We flew from New York to Mexico She had such a good time Her sister sang a beautiful song at the party He told me a funny story

The negative of irregular verbs
The negative of irregular verbs is formed in the same way as regular verbs. Did not (didn't) + base form of the verb I didn't know the answer to the question We didn't enjoy the concert I did not like the book He did not answer to the emails

Time Expressions
We normally use the following time expressions with the Past Simple: expressions with ago at the end (a month ago, two years ago...) Last night / week / year, at + a time, on + a day of the week or date, in + a year, in the past, yesterday, etc. All the time expressions can go at the beginning or at the end of a sentence, but they usually go at the end. The plane arrived at 5 pm He worked in a bank a year ago We talked to him last week He was born in 1972

Short answers are formed with Yes / No + pronoun + did / didn't Did you like the film? Yes, I did Did she phone you last night? No, she didn't
