WEAK AS A ROCK

The Compendium of Peter'sJourney into Weakness

INTRO

The Apostle Peter

learned to be weak.

Through five major episodes in his life, Peter learned weakness.

Though he was the leader of the disciples, though his name meant "rock," though Jesus himself said that he would have an important place in the church, Peter had to learn true weakness before any of this would happen.

EPISODE 2

The rooster

crows.

While Jesus was being put on trial, Peter was questioned, too.

69 Now Peter was sitting out in the courtyard, and a servant girl came to him. “You also were with Jesus of Galilee,” she said. 70 But he denied it before them all. “I don’t know what you’re talking about,” he said. 71 Then he went out to the gateway, where another servant girl saw him and said to the people there, “This fellow was with Jesus of Nazareth.”

Matthew 26:69-71

EPISODE 2

The rooster

crows.

72 He denied it again, with an oath: “I don’t know the man!” 73 After a little while, those standing there went up to Peter and said, “Surely you are one of them; your accent gives you away.” 74 Then he began to call down curses, and he swore to them, “I don’t know the man!”

Matthew 26:72-74

EPISODE 2

Peter's denial

is noticed.

The book of Luke adds detail to the ending.

59 About an hour later another asserted, “Certainly this fellow was with him, for he is a Galilean.” 60 Peter replied, “Man, I don’t know what you’re talking about!” Just as he was speaking, the rooster crowed. 61 The Lord turned and looked straight at Peter. Then Peter remembered the word the Lord had spoken to him: “Before the rooster crows today, you will disown me three times.”

Luke 22:59-61

What is Peter

learning here?

And he went outside and wept bitterly.

Luke 22:62

Imagine how helpless Peter was in this moment, as he met eyes with Jesus - and how quickly he went from denying Jesus to wanting to boldly confess him.

What was Peter failing to understand about Jesus? What was Peter failing to understand about himself? What was Peter failing to understand about strength?
