Banksy
"the son of a migrant from syria"
"A Son of a Migrant from Syria"
1st commercial success for a computer, Macintosh, 1984
This graffiti is called "The Son of a Migrant from Syria". It has been painted in December 2015 by Banksy at the entrance of the "Jungle", a camp improvised by the migrants next to Calais. Banksy shows us Steve Jobs, the deceased founder and CEO of Apple, holding a Macintosh in his right hand and a bundle on his left shoulder.
What is Banksy trying to say?
In a press release accompanying this artwork, which is very rare coming from Banksy, he stated:
“We are often made to believe that immigration is a burden on a country's resources, but Steve Jobs was the son of a Syrian immigrant. Apple is the highest-grossing company, which pays more than $ 7 billion in taxes; but this could only have been the case because a man from Homs was able to enter the United States ”.
This work is one of four, produced by the artist in Calais, all devoted to the refugee crisis.
Why did I choose this graffiti?
I have chosen this graffiti because this message breaks all the prejudices towards the migrants. When you're interesting yourself on their treatment in France and other countries, you must be concerned. Also, I found this "example" interesting because I didn't knew that Steve Jobs was Syrian. I love Banksy's work because he hides behind anonymity to describe his opinion in graffitis without getting in trouble. I think this is the real art.
