British colonies
ffrom the 16th to the 18th century
By the end of the 18th C, it had grown extevinsively in India, Africa, the Caribean, Canada and what is known now as the USA France colonies lost to the British and Spanish colonies lost to Mexico.
17th century
There were also non- British immigrants living in North America, mostly German, since their language was the second most spoken at the time, but it declined in use during the first World War because of the stigma of being associated with Germany.
By the beginning of the 20th century English surpassed French language, and become more important after the US economic growth and the role of the US in the 2nd world war increased its political influence in Europe, you can see this because after the war the Treaty of Versailles was written also in English and spotted the start of English as a language of diplomacy meanwhile the country developed fu lly into a World superpower.
Settlers
As the British kept on establishing colonies around the world in much larger areas and even the Middle East by the 1920’s the British empire covered almost a quarter of the earth and about 1/5 of the population of the world. After settlers establised the language became a prestigious one and a lingua franca facilitating communication between the linguistically diverse populations.
a growing country
Definitive globalization
As the US grew in power the advancements in technology helped to a mass communication rise and so American movies, music and TV spread all over the world exposing the language to everyone else and not only to international business and diplomacy. As the language became global, many of countries integrated it to the curriculum as a second language as a response to the growing importance of English.
the global lingua franca
Globalization, the accelerated growth of the internet and social media platforms solidified the position of English as a global language, and it has helped people from all over the world to use English as a bridge to communicate with every corner in the world.
