INTRODUCTION
Are you the kind of person who can predict how a story will end ? Can you guess who the bad guy is in a movie? Have you ever been disappointed by a series' finale on tv? Then you have also probably predicted that we are going to learn about predictions and inferences! Inferences and predictions help us understand and appreciate texts. But wait there's more! Inferences and predictions can also give us access to insight! What do all of these words mean? How do they work together? Let's find out !
ATTENTION!
It's not about getting the RIGHT answer. It's about your progress and evidence! Stop thinking: Is my answer correct? Instead think: Can I support my understanding with evidence?
STEP 1 -LET'S BE ON THE SAME PAGE!
Intention: Define and learn inference and prediction. We will deal with insight later. Success Criteria I will succeed if:I can create definitions of inference and prediction in MY OWN WORDS. Task: Make inferences and predictions in different texts.
STEP 1.1 - ON THE SAME PAGE : PLAY
A)View the definitions from a dictionary: To Infer: To predict: Together, as a class, we are going to infer and predict using certain texts. The goal is to create your own definitions of prediction and inference.
Play the Infer and Predict Game as a class.
STEP 1.2 - ON THE SAME PAGE :WRITE
Write down your definitions of prediction and inference so far. You will come back later to complete the Insight section. Create a learning log called "Inferences, Predictions and Insight". Just like this one: Go back and add information to your learning log at any time to monitor your learning!
STEP 2 - CONNECT THE IDEAS
Intention: Understand how we can use inferences and predictions to better comprehend texts. Success Criteria I will succeed if: I can share my inferences and predictions to construct meaning with others. Task: Make and share inferences and predictions in various texts.
STEP 2.1 - CONNECT : Inferences and Predictions
Now that we have a common basic understanding of inferences and predictions,
let's see how we use predictions and inferences to understand texts. You will first explore clues that can help you infer and predict before diving into a text. Then, with partners, you will participate in an oral interaction while watching a short video clip where you will use inferences and predictions to construct the meaning of a text.
STEP 2.2 CONNECT - Using inferences and predictions before a story:Read and Write
Instructions: Check out A Hurricane Destroyed My Town (page 14). Answer these questions Adjust your learning log, if necessary.
STEP 2.3 - CONNECT:Watch, Pause, Talk!
Now that we know more about how to infer and predict before a story, let's see how we can infer and predict during a story. With partners, you will participate in an oral interaction while watching a short video clip.
STEP 2.4 - CONNECT
Video for Oral Interaction
Instructions:
- Look at the evaluation criteria, with your teacher to create a model with useful functional language.
- Every time the video pauses, you will see questions on the screen.
- Interact orally to share possible inferences and predictions to make sense of the story.
STEP 2.5 - CONNECT: WRITE
Go back to your learning log "Inferences, Predictions and Insight". 1. Refine your definitions of prediction and inference. 2. Complete the Insight section.
STEP 3 -SIMILAR TRANSFER
You now know how to infer and predict, but how can inferences and predictions unlock insight? What secret key can unlock your insight? Let's transfer what we know to help you understand a story more deeply!
STEP 3.1 - Similar Transfer:Watch, Pause, Talk!
With partners, you will participate in an oral interaction while watching a short video clip. Except this time we are going to watch the same clip a second time to see how this impacts our insight.
STEP 3.2
Video for Oral Interaction
Instructions:
- Look at the evaluation criteria with your teacher (you can also create a model with useful functional language).
- Participate in an oral interaction, while watching a short video clip.
- Every time the video pauses, you will interact to share possible answers.
STEP 3.3
Second Video for Oral Interaction
Instructions:
- Continue the oral interaction
- Watch this video. It is the same story but some questions were modified.
step 3.4 - Reflect
How does watching the clip a second time affect your responses? Which ability helps you understand how others feel? E _ _ _ _ _ _ Add these answers to your learning log!
STEP 3.5 - Similar Transfer :Read and Write
Instructions: Read the story Good Enough by Rachel Vail to explore how empathy helps making insightful inferences and predictions. Answer these questions. Adjust your learning log,
if necessary.
STEP 4 - DISSIMILAR TRANSFER
Can you transfer what you learned about inferences, predictions and insight in unfamiliar situations? Let's find out!
STEP 4.1 - Dissimilar Transfer : Read, Watch, Understand!
The situations you are about to explore are quite different from steps 2 and 3, but transfer what you have learned, and you should make sense of it all! Follow your teacher's instructions for the next activities.* *Your teacher might ask you to read and watch both texts or might give you different options. *Your teacher will inform you of the success criteria and assignments for each activity.
STEP 4.2 - Dissimilar Transfer:Read and Write - Text 1
Instructions: Read the story Crossing Canada One Step at a Time to explore how empathy helps making insightful inferences and predictions even in unfamiliar situations. Answer the questions after the text. Adjust your learning log, if necessary.
STEP 4.3 - DISSIMILAR TRANSFER: READ AND WRITE - TEXT 2
Instructions: Read the story Leaving Earth to explore how empathy helps making insightful inferences and predictions even in unfamiliar situations. Answer the questions after the text. Adjust your learning log, if necessary.

Instructions:
- Watch the video first.
- When finished, click on the icon to reveal the question. Submit your most insightful answer to your teacher.
STEP 4.5
