00 Poster Explanation
The Tree Analogy
- The background image itself represents the biblical Tree of Life from the Book of Genesis, one of the two significant trees in the Garden of Eden which Adam and Eve were to respect, although they could eat from it. It is significant in the context of The Handmaid's Tale, as the forced reproductive programs imposed by the Gilead regime serve as a corruption of the Tree of Life. As Gilead is a Christian-themed religious cult, it makes sense that they would parallel this theme, and the constant cycle of trying to create life (but through a morally corrupt process). - The Tree may also be interpreted as the Tree of Knowledge: the tree which Adam and Eve were NOT to eat from, which caused original sin. Eating the fruit from this tree would parallel the corruption of motherhood, romance, and spiritualism which The Handmaid's tale criticizes. -Aa
