The film begins with a flashback during the night in Paris when Driss drives his boss Philippe's Maserati at high speed. Driss and Philippe are stopped by the police and Driss tells them that Philippe is quadriplegic and must be driven to the hospital because of a stroke. It is not true, but the policemen trust them and escort Philippe and Driss to the hospital. The film tells the true story of Philippe Pozzo di Borgo, a rich businessman who became quadriplegic after a paragliding accident. He lives in a luxurious Parisian mansion, with some assistants, maids and a butler. Driss, on the other side, is a black, young man with no ambitions or hopes who lives with the State welfare benefits. He has spent six months in jail for robbery and doesn't look for a job and asks Philippe to sign his papers to keep receiving money from the Government. Philippe finds him particular and decides to hire him to be helped in his everyday's commitments. Philippe does not care about Driss's past because he is the only one that does not treat him with pity or compassion, but as an equal.
Driss and Philippe become closer and Philippe introduces Driss to modern art, classical music and opera, while Driss shows to his "friend-boss" how to live freely, listening to pop music, dancing like crazy and driving the car at very high speed. Driss likes painting and Philippe finds his paintings very interesting and offers them to an art critique who buys one for € 11.000 that Philippe gives to Driss.Driss discovers that Philippe has an epistolary relationship with a woman called Eleonore, and encourages him to meet her but Philippe is scared of her reaction when she discovers his disability. One day, Driss' s cousin has troubles with a gang and Driss takes him to Philippe's palace. He started then talking with Philippe about his life as an orphan in Senegal and when he was adopted by his aunt who brought him in France. Philippe understands Driss's need to support his family and leaves him free from his job. Driss then returns to his suburbs and helps his younger cousin. In the meantime, Philippe is very sad without Driss, his morale is very low and he stops taking care of himself. His assistant is very worried and contacts Driss, who arrives and decides to drive Philippe in the Maserati, which brings the story back to the first scene of the film. After they have eluded the police, Driss takes Philippe to the seaside. After a nice shaving and dressing elegantly, Philippe and Driss arrive at an elegant restaurant where Driss suddenly leaves the table and says good luck to Philippe for his lunch date. Philippe does not understand, but a few seconds later, Eleonore arrives. The movie ends with Philippe that looks through the window and sees Driss outside, smiling at him.
The Intouchables is one of the best movie I have ever watched... maybe the best one.Philippe and Driss understand each other despite their different backgrounds. Their differences are the strenght of their friendship. This means that when somebody loves and trusts somebody else there is no rich or poor, no black or white, no religion or country that can stop their relationship and friendship. The background music is very strong and helps a lot to feel the characters' feelings and mood. The fact that the movie is based on a true story is more moving because it means that when it comes to health, money doesn't count to save you. Money can certainly make your life better, but what helps your morale is the love and friendship you have around.
