Three parts: - heart - blood vessels - blood

What are the 3 parts of the circulatory system?

CHECK

- heart - blood vessels - blood

It carries useful materials like oxygen, water and nutrient.

It removes waste products like carbon dioxide.

Your heart is a muscle which keeps all the blood in your circulatory system flowing.

Pulse

Pulse is the measurement of how fast the heart is pumping blood around the body The faster your heart beats, the quicker your pulse Pulse is measured in beats per minute (BPM). You can measure your pulse by counting for 15 seconds and times by 4 (15x4 = 60) Exercise affects the pulse. The harder you exercise, the higher your pulse rate will be as your heart is pumping faster to give oxygen to your body.

The lungs

We inhale oxygen-rich air. We exhale air filled with carbon dioxide.

Air breathed in through the mouth or nose travels down the trachea, through the bronchi into one of the lungs. The air travels into the bronchioles and into the air sacs (alveoli).

The effects of smokingSmoking is very unhealthy. It can affect your body in several ways: Brain: Nicotine is a chemical which affects the brain. It can make a person feel more relaxed. It also causes cravings and makes smoking addictive. Blood: Smoking releases a poisonous gas called carbon monoxide into the bloodstream. This causes there to be less oxygen than normal flowing through the blood. Heart: As there is less oxygen in the blood, the heart starts to beat faster to create more oxygen to pump round the body. Lungs: It can damage your airways and alveoli. A build-up of tar in the lungs causes smokers to cough. In extreme cases, it can also cause lung cancer.

Passive smoking: Breathing in smoke from another person’s cigarette can also be damaging. Passive smoking can cause the same sorts of illnesses as actual smoking. Childhood asthma has been linked to passive smoking.
