One theory is that each wave represents an Orixá, Orixás are deities worshiped by Afro-Brazilian religions. Another theory believes the custom is linked to honoring Iemanjá, the mother of all Orixás and Goddess of the Sea. You don’t have to dive into the ocean to do that. All you need is to get your feet wet.
