MY FAVORITES DOCUMENTS

and why

It is part of my favourites because I have once watched the movie and absolutely loved it. The story is intriguing, surprising and the characters are endearing. I always have been curious and interesed in fanstatic worlds, so it corresponds to me.

miss peregrine's home for peculiar children

I have chosen that one, as it especially makes me want to know what happens next. From the small details that make a whole difference in the story, to the old environment of the end of the Victorian era, everything is quite good to be selected.

HARKER's DIARY : DRACULA plot SUMMARY 1

Considering that I usually like History, learning foreign History truly pleases me, and broadly speaking, thanks to that topic, I learnt the mistreatment of disabilited persons. That's the kind of things I like to study, because that is new to me.

VICTORIAN FREAKS SHOWS

DOCUMENTs i didn'T LIKE

and why

If I dislike the trailer of Dracula, it is because of the woman who seems to be too devoted to a man, who actually doesn't care about her. Also it is an old movie so the special effects are awful and finally Dracula's forms are hideous.

The trailer of dracula (1992 movie)

If find this story hard to understand, even with the Oedipus complex explanation I still don't know why he would have kill him, it doesn't make sense to me ... The fact that the narrator doen't realize what he has done is disturbing : he's clearly mad.

THE TELL-TALE HEART (BY EDGAR ALLAN POE)

VINCENT POEM and animation (BY TIM BURTON)

About this poem, the story is seriously too dramatic and not realistic, maybe it is made to show how much kids can create a make-believe world, altough I can't imagine a kid inventing himself such an uncanny life and even torturing himself ...

My personal documents

  • Monster House

2 movies

  • Dark Shadows

Presentation + why they are a good supplement to the Gothic Chapter.

movie 1

MONSTER HOUSE

It's the story of DJ a boy who spies on his neighbour "Nebbercracker" : he's really crual and get mad at anyone who walks on his lawn. One day, DJ had to cross it for his friend, but the old man had a heart attack because he yelled at him as usual. Now that he's gone, it is worst than ever : the children understand that the creepy man wasn't the problem...

I identify this movie to "The Fall of the House of Usher", as both stories talks about a house haunted by the soul of a woman, who died accidentally. There are also characters who try to understand what is going on, and a man who was close to the victim, but is condemned with her suffering core. Even if the end are totally different, we still get the main idea. As far as I know, the story of Poe wasn't easy to understand, contrary to Monster House since it's a movie for kids.

MOVIE 2

DARK SHADOWS

The movie tells the story of Barnabas Collins, a man who got trapped in a coffin during 200 years, before being released in 1972. Unfortunately, when he was locked, the family's buisness has collapsed. As family is more important than anything, Barnabas will try his best to save it, not without difficulties.

I'm convinced that it's a good addition to this chapter, firstly since it was produced by Tim Burton, secondly because there are all kind of gothic features : love-stories, many deaths, the main setting is a mansion, a lots of supernatural powers such as curses, ...

CONCLUSION

definition/summary of the themes + my opinion

01

what is the gothic genre ?

The main feature of a gothic fiction is horror, with usually a powerful love-story and creatures as characters, so it is based on supernatural events. The setting is extremely important ! It must comes from the Gothic architecture.

examples of GOTHIC features = Vampires, haunted house, mansions, death, pain, ...

02

As for me, I think that the love-stories are in a certain way, are all the same : an impossible love between one lover who's devoted to the other (who is not human). But even if I don't find it peculiarly enjoyable, I still appreciate the twists and the action, which are quite current.

my opinion about it

I learnt that it was an Irish man (Bram Stoker) who created the character Dracula.

MY FAVORITES DOCUMENTS

and why

First of all, it is important to know the context in which the book has been written to understand it perfectly, therefore it really helped me. Then, knowing that, one of my favorite subject is History , I can only appreciate learning things I didn't know.

ANIMAL FARM CONTEXT AND BACKGROUND

As far as I am concerned, I think it is truly important be aware of what we eat, and especially the treatment of the animals in breeding, and this parody is actually a campagn against animal cruelty.

THE MEATRIX (ANIMATED PARODY)

The further a society drifts from truth, the more it will hate those who speak it.

GEORGE ORWELL

CONCLUSION

definition/summary of the themes + my opinion

01

WHAT IS A DYSTOPIA ?

As opposed to an Utopia, a Dystopia is a futuristic world where society has became dangerous, either (but not only) because of a dictatorial and powerful figure, or because of the unawareness of human beings.

EXAMPLES OF DYSTOPIA FEATURES : INJUSTICE, SUFFERING OF PEOPLE, underisable world, survival, ...

02

my opinion about it

In my mind, this topic is absolutely interesting and frightening at the same time, for the reason that the stories can become real in our globalized world, and already exists like in China for example...

I learnt that England was an ally of the USSR during World War II.

THANK YOU!
