Lesson 1

Ads everywhere

even in schools

Really ???

describe the picture

Who ? What ? Where ?

lockers

read

  • Why does Conor mention that the ads are in “a public school”?
  • What do you think the influence of ads is on students?
  • Are ads in schools a problem? Why? Why not?

write

There are ads painted on the lockers in Ben’s school. A possible consequence is that these ads may push students to buy more things or to influence students to buy certain brands. Conor is surprised that there are ads in a public school because you are not supposed to encourage consumerism in schools, even less in public schools. Students are supposed to study and learn critical thinking and that seems contrary to buying things.

answer the questions

  • What is the main problem exposed at the beginning of the video?
  • What did the city of San Francisco decide to do about its trash?
  • Can you give numbers?
  • What does the city expect to be able to do in the end? What is its final goal?

write

  • The main problem explained in the video is that we produce more and more trash.
  • So, the city of San Francisco has decided to reduce their waste to protect the environment.
  • Americans throw away about 4 pounds per person per day!
  • The city hopes that they will be able to become a zero waste city!

Lesson 2

Let's go shopping !

or... should we ?

Maybe not...

describe the picture

Who ? What ? Where ?

a cart / a shopping cart

Let's go further

What do you think about the woman ? Does she look real ? What do you think she symbolizes?

write

This is a sculpture by the artist Duane Hanson called "“Supermarket Lady”, probably made of fiberglass. It represents an overweight woman pushing a shopping cart full of mass consumption products. She is the epitome of the society of consumption and she doesn’t seem happy. Duane Hanson wants us to see that consumerism is not the key to happiness. He expects to raise awareness about overconsumption and its consequences.
