Respiratory System

Really Inspiring

It has two basic functions:

  • Bring oxygen into our body.
  • Help eliminate carbon dioxide from our body.

Breathing requires that all the respiratory organs work in sync to leave oxygen into bloodstream and eliminate the excess of carbon dioxide.

Other functions

Vocal cords (transverse section with top view)

Vocal cordsrepresented in orange (sagittal section with lateral view)

Olfactory sense:In the nasal cavity is the olfactory bulb that processes information to detect odors.

Voice is the sound that is produced when air passes from the lungs and trough the larynx, were vocal cords are found: two muscle bands that vibrate to emit sounds.

3D Model

Upper respiratory system: nose (nasal passages and sinuses), pharynx and larynx. They filter, moisten, and warm inhaled or inspired air.

Index

Lower respiratory system: trachea, bronchi and bronchioles. They lead air to the lungs, where gas exchange takes place; carbon dioxide (CO2) outlet oxygen (O2) inlet.

Inspiration or Inhalation

Espiration or Exhalation

It is a fairly passive process, which consists of removing the air from the body.It is used to remove carbon dioxide.

It is an active process, which consists of entering air in to the body.It serves to obtain oxygen.

Hematosis

Thanks to hematosis, a gaseous exchange develops between the blood of the living being and the external environment that enables the elimination of carbon dioxide and assimilation of oxygen through external respiration.

The term hematosis refers to the process that allows oxygenate blood.
