A complex age where progress and stability coexisted with poverty and injustice was named "Victorian compromise"

The society moved to solve the poverty issue, creating charities and voluntary involving the entire community.

Keeping up appearances became very important in the society. Education, hygiene, good manners and self-help were encouraged.

A sense of respectability was spread, from the middle to the working classes.
