There are many uses for this tense:

  1. We can use it to talk about facts, permanent situations, and opinions.
  2. We can use it for regular actions, habits and routines.
  3. We can use it to describe films, plays, books

Examples:

1-

  • Facts: The sun doesn't go round the earth.
  • Permanent situations: I don't live in the city
  • Opinions/ideas: I think New Yourk is exciting
  • Likes and dislikes: My brother likes rock music
  • Routine or regular actions: He works there once a month.
  • We generally use adverbs of frequency: always, never, sometimes or other time expressions: every day, once/twice a month, three times a week.

  • Books/plays: the story takes place in.The United Kingdom. They main character works as a private detective.

Structure

The present simple is divided into two parts:a part with the verbt to be and another part with other verbs apart from the verb to be.

As you can see there are three structures. Sentences usually start with a SUBJECT, then follows a VERB and then an OBJECT.

The Verb to be :

Am-is-are

They are used in the three types of sentences ( positive, negative and question) We use a noun or an adjective after the verb to be.

  • When we use verbs we do not use the verb to be.
  • in the third person ( she-he-it) We add an "s" , "es", "is" to the verb ONLY IN A POSITIVE SENTENCE.
  • In questions and negations we use the auxiliary DO or DOES

Negative Sentences

We're not at the cinema

They aren't friends any more

My sister doesn't like studying
