Causes - before 1517

Some of the causes of reformation were mainly because of the Renaissance. Some of the ideas of the Renaissance spread because of the printing press. And rulers resented the Pope's control over them

Martin Luther - 1517

Martin Luther is a very important person for the Reformation. He spoke out against the indulgences of the Catholic church and pinned his 95 theses to a door of his Catholic Church

The Response to Luther - 1521

Luther's ideas spread rapidly because of the printing press. He was eventually excommunicated in 1521 by the Pope, Leo X,. The Holy Roman Emperor tried to get Luther to recant, but failed. He then declared that Luther was a heretic

Henry VIII - 1509-1547

Henry VIII was the King of England from 1509-1547. He wanted to divorce his wife becuase she couldn't produce an heir to the throne. He didn't care and set a precedent to divorce and not be scared of the Pope.

Anne Boleyn -1533-1536

She was the Queen of England from 1533-1536. She married Henry VIII and gave birth to a girl but Henry VIII wanted an heir to the throne, not a girl. Henry VIII gave up and beheaded Anne. Henry did the same with 5 other wives and none of them ended up producing an heir.

John Calvin 1536

John Calvin was a French Reformation leader. In 1536 he wrote the Institutes. One of the main things he talked about was predestination, how your life is planned out from you by God before you're even born.

John Knox 1689

John Knox was a writer, scottish minister and theologian. He worked with John Calvin to create the Presbyterian denomination. Although, it took 120 years for it to be well know.
