Joseph Mallord William Turner

Joseph Mallord William Turner was born in 1775 in Covent Garden. Where he had impressions and emotions which he then created with drawings dating back to the beginning and end of his career around 1780. In 1789 he managed to enter the Royal Academy of Arts in London. He died in Cheyenne Walk in 1851.

  • His father and his mother came from a family of butchers.
  • He began his artistic activity by coloring a series of plates.

William Turner was an artist who lived in the period of Romanticism. The world "Romantic" was adopted in the last decades of the 18th century Enlightenment and became doaminant in most intellectual in areas. They became the main means of expression in art, music, party, drama and philosophy. English Romanticism covers the period between the French Revolution and the coronation of Queen Victoria unfiels movement. Romanticism valued the subjective and irrational parts of human nature: emotion, immigration, introspection and relationship with nature. this period began in England in 1798 and ended in the IX century

“Rain, steam,speed” is one of the most famous paintings of William Turner. The painting was painted in 1884, in the painting you can see a train expelling steam as it is going very fast while it is raining. Nowday the painting is in the National Gallery of London

Another famous painting is «Fisherman at the Sea». The merciless and powerful nature seems to mark the fate of the «Fisherman at the sea», painted by William Turner. In fact, on the horizon, you can see the silhouettes of, dangerous pointed rocks, called «the needles», off the coast of the Isle of Wight. In the dark of the sea at night, the moon lights up the scene with its strength but , instead of helping the sailor, it seems to highlight his weakness. About this painting, there is the strong moonlight that represents the force of nature.
