The First World War had caused a sense of disinlusionment.'The Lost Generation' of writers, including F. Scott Fitzgerald, Ernest Hemingway, and John Steinbeck, expressed their cynicism and questioned the values of Western civilization in their work.

The american dream

The 1920s were a time of unprecedented economic growth and prosperity in the United States. Consumer culture flourished. According to the American dream, anyone, regardless of their socioeconomic background, could achieve material affluence with hard work.

PROHIBITION

In 1919, the 18th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution banned the manufacture, sale, or transportation of alcohol. However, the consumption of alcohol was not prohibited.

SPEAKEASIES

Speakeasies were secret bars where alcohol was sold illegally during the prohibition.

The 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, ratified in 1920, granted women the right to vote. The young women who were flouting social norms and exercising their freedom during the '20s were known as 'flappers'.

THE JAZZ AGE

Jazz, a musical genre created by African Americans in Louisiana and heavily influenced by blues and ragtime, became very popular across the US and Europe in the 1920s. One of the most famous jazz musicians was trumpeter Louis Armstrong (pictured). Jazz was often performed in speakeasies.
