Le prétérit BE + ing s'emploie pour désigner une action en cours de déroulement mais dans le passé ("j'étais en train de...")
Il se forme en conjuguant l'auxiliaire BE au prétérit (was, were) suivi d'un V-ing et peut servir à exprimer la simultanéité d'événements dans le passé:
