The Befana

In Italy there is the Christmas tradition of the Befana, the figure of an old woman, a witch who visits all Italian homes on the night of January 5 to 6 to leave her gifts. Tradition says that children should leave an orange or tangerine, and a glass of wine for the Befana to regain her strength.

The Giubiana

One of the most popular festivals in northern Italy, in the region between Lombardy and Piedmont, is La Giubiana, held on the last Thursday of January. During this festival, large bonfires are lit in the town square, in which a puppet that symbolizes a witch, who is dressed in rags, is set on fire.

Carnaval

The Venice Carnival is without a doubt one of the most famous in the world. Every year there are many celebrations and initiatives on the central days of the festival. In addition to the typical masquerades, there are parades and music concerts.
