ELEMENTARY

7th grade

They usually have English lessons on Thursday, 120 minutes. The teacher describes them as a hard-working group. They don’t have major behavioural problems. They have a higher level of English than usual because they have been having English classes since 4th grade due to an institutional English project. Most of the students have WIFI or data and at least a smartphone at home. Most classes have been asynchronous. Synchronous meetings were held through WhatsApp or Zoom only to do dynamic activities and dispel students’ doubts. Regarding synchronous meetings, it is usual that only 10 students out of 30 actually attend. Within a COVID-19 context, the teacher sends activities every 15 days and they are equal to two classes. These activities are checked by the head teacher beforehand, and they are sent to the 7th grade teacher who adds them to a booklet. The booklet includes every single subject, and all the subjects work with the same topics from different perspectives. The English teacher works hand by hand with the grade teacher to choose and adapt the topics. They have already worked with different topics, such as “Aztecas, Mayas e Incas, Ecosistemas, Animales de Mendoza, Cuidado Personal”, etc. There is not an adapted book, so the English teacher has to look for adapted material online or make it herself. Finally, the grade teacher posts different parts of the booklet (different subjects divided according to the day) on a WhatsApp group and students hand in the activities privately.

They usually have English lessons on Friday, 120 minutes. Within a COVID-19 context, the teacher sends activities every 15 days. These activities are not checked by the head teacher beforehand, but teachers make sure that all the classes are working with the same topics at the same time. This context made it impossible for the institution to carry out projects. Most of the students have smartphones and data at home, but they lack computers and WIFI. There are a few students who are not connected at all. Three of them do not usually hand in assignments because they have learning disabilities, so the head teacher will tell us whether we are allowed to work with such students. The institution contacts students who do not hand in assignments to keep track of them. One student is also sent printed material because he does not have any kind of virtual resource to receive it. Bearing this in mind, the institution has decided to use WhatsApp groups instead of a platform. Teachers post activities on the group and students hand them in privately. The teacher tried to arrange synchronous meetings before, but students did not participate. Issues previously mentioned do not allow them to have video calls. The teacher describes them as a lazy group. Within this context, they do not usually answer the phone or WhatsApp group messages, and they have not been handing in English activities lately.
