Thanksgiving what is it?

In 1620 some colonists from England decided to sail to America on a small ship called "Mayflower". They arrived in America in December. It was cold, they had no vegetables or fruit to eat and no farm animals. Not all of them survived that winter.

When the winter finished, the local Native Americans showed the colonists how to farm the land, catch fish and build houses.

By November 1621 they had homes and enough food for everyone. They decided to organise a celebration to say "Thank you" to the Native Americans

After some time, Thanksgiving became a national holiday in the USA. Nowadays it is always celebrated on the fourth Thursday of November. Americans visit their familes and have a big, traditional meal.
