Thanksgiving and Black Friday

Thanksgiving

Families and friends usually get together for a large meal or dinner and have a lot of fun. The Thanksgiving holiday weekend is considered one of the busiest travel periods of the year. Students are given a four-day or five-day weekend vacation. Thanksgiving is also a holiday for most workers.

Thanksgiving is celebrated in the USA on the fourth Thursday in November every year. It is associated with giving thanks to God. In the beginning people expressed gratitude for the harvest they reaped, but now it has become a non-religious celebration. The most important part of the celebration is the dinner which includes the turkey and pumpkin.

The first Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving was first celebrated by the Pilgrims in 1621. The Pilgrims sailed from England to North America to find religious freedom. Their ship, the Mayflower, landed at Plymouth Rock, Massachusetts in late fall, 1620, just as winter was beginning. The winter was very hard for them. They didn't have enough food and many of them were very sick. When the winter of 1621 finished, almost half of the Pilgrims had died. In the spring, the Wampanoag Indians helped the Pilgrims. They taught them how to grow wheat, barley, corn, and some vegetables.

The first Thanksgiving

After the summer growing season, in 1621, the Pilgrims celebrated their first harvest with a 3-day feast. They invited their Native American friends. Without the help of the Wampanoag, the Pilgrims would not have survived. Thanksgiving became a national holiday in 1863. That year, President Abraham Lincoln declared the last Thursday in November as a day to remember the first Thanksgiving. In 1941 the Congress made Thanksgiving Day, the 4th Thursday in November, an official national holiday.

What is Black Friday?

Black Friday is the day after the American holiday of Thanksgiving, which is celebrated on the fourth Thursday of November. It is a holiday in the United States, and it has long been a popular day to start shopping for Christmas. Big retailers have started to offer discounts and bargains on this day, and it has become more and more popular. They have even invented Cyber Monday (the Monday after Thanksgiving, when people often buy more online). The idea of Black Friday has also spread around the world.

Buy Nothing Day

What's the problem with Black Friday?

We love bargains, but events like Black Friday encourage people to buy things that they don’t really need and can’t afford. Many people seem to completely lose control of both their spending and their tempers. What's more Black Friday is considered bad for small shopkeepers, who cannot offer the kinds of price cuts that the big companies can.

Is there an alternative?

Instead of buying as much as possible on Black Friday, you could do the opposite and buy absolutely nothing. Since 1997, Buy Nothing Day has been held on the same day as Black Friday. Its rules are simple: don’t buy anything for 24 hours. Be prepared for a surprise: this is actually actually difficult.

What to do instead?

Spending your money

Some people carry out protests at shopping centres. Others go for a walk in nature.

Buy Nothing Day aims to raise awareness of how to be an ethical consumer and make decisions that can help to protect the environment as well as save you money.

It's up to you!
