Ellis Island is in New York harbour and it was the largest immigration station. It processed 12 million immigrants from 1892 to 1954.

The first thing immigrants saw was the Statue of Liberty, which stands in New York harbour. So it became a symbol of freedom, opportunity and welcome for people looking for a better life.

Six medical exam

About 12 million immigrants passed through Ellis Island

Processing time: 3-4 hours

In 1976 it opened to the public as a museum.

People who passed the medical exam went to the Great Hall to be processed. Officials asked them questions concerning their name, their families, their jobs and how much money they had.

Immigrants were inspected for visible ailments. It was known as the "six second medical exam". Some people were sent back because they couldn't work, they were criminals or they were insane.

Immigrants came here from Europe and Asia to settle in New York. They were looking for a better life. They wanted to live The American Dream.
