Are you a scientist, or have you ever studied science at school/university? Imagine you had to do an experiment. What steps would you take to ensure you were successful?

Listen twice and note ONLY the KEY WORDS.

I'm going to read you a text about advice for a successful experiment.

STEP 1

With your partner, use the key words to reconstruct the text.

STEP 2

Check what you wrote against what I said.

STEP 3

E = mc2

Now check what you wrote against the text below.

One of the critical skills required for any scientist is the ability to consistently design and carry out successful experiments. Despite the fact that there are many variables that can cause failure, there are some basic steps that, if taken into account every time, can increase your chances of success. Firstly, make your objective clear- what are you setting out to do? What are you looking into and why? Next, identify the best method to get the job done and put forward a written protocol and realistic timeline. Make sure you gather all the necessary materials in advance and make an early start on the day of the experiment. Record everything, especially any deviations from the protocol, and any difficulties you experienced. Finally, having finished the experiment, analyse the results. Hopefully the experiment turned out as you expected, but if not, try to find out what could have gone wrong. What’s more, don’t be afraid to ask for advice, and don’t take issue with people who point out your mistakes – learn from them.

Next, underline all the multi-word verbs and phrases that you can find, and use the context to explain their meaning to your partner. Write them below.

In addition, do not be afraid to request advice, and do not take issue with people who point out your errors; learn from them.
