It solves problems of homonymy and ambiguity.
ORCID is a universal, neutral, independent and free identification system.

It is dedicated specifically to members of the scientific community.

It was created by a consortium of many actors from the world of research (universities, research institutions, learned societies, publishers, etc.).
ORCID is the result of an international consensus.
What is it?
The creation of an ORCID generates a web page where the researcher can complete his/her profile by filling in a number of headings: jobs, affiliations, work, funding, websites etc.
The researcher controls his ORCID and manages his web page independently. He may or may not authorise the automatic updating of his profile.
