Past Tense
Irregular Verbs
a verb that does not follow the normal pattern of inflection.
Past Simple
We use the past tense to talk about something that happened once in the past: e.g.
- I was in Spain last summer.
- I got home very late last night.
Past Continuous
The past continuous is used for a continuous action in the past. It is formed from the past tense of the verb be, together with the -ing form of a verb for example:
- I was working hard when the telephone interrupted me.
- Everyone was shouting.
- They were always arguing.
Past Perfect
The past perfect is used to talk about an event that was completed in the past before something else happened:
- I had just finished cooking the meal when my guests arrived.
- I didn't want to watch the film, as I had already seen it.
