Established in 1989, the Vendée Globe is a race of lonely sailors that takes place every 4 years.The captains (the skippers) have to travel 43,000 km around the world following a precise route: competitors start fromSables-d'Ulonne in Vendée (France) and return to their starting point after passing Antarctica.Then, the skippers pass the Cape of Good Hope in South Africa, Cape Leeuwin in southwest Australia and Cape Horn in the south of the American continent. This race is unique, because the skippers sail around the world without stopping and without assistance. They have to deal with any difficulties on their own.In the case of illness or injury, only telephone support with a doctor is accepted. Vendée Globe combines adventure and sporting achievement. This race is so difficult and wonderful that it is sometimes called “Everest of the Seas”. The race lasts three to four months. The event is held on single-hulled vessels 60 feet (18.28 m) long. They are extremely fast and powerful boats, specially designed for solitary regattas.

Utworzony w 1989 roku Vendée Globe to wyścig samotnych żeglarzy, który odbywa się co 4 lata. Kapitanowie muszą pokonać 43 000 km dookoła świata podążając precyzyjną trasą: zawodnicy startują z Sables-d'Ulonne w Vendée (Francja) i wracają do miejsca startowego po ominięciu Antarktydy. Następnie żeglarze przepływają Przylądek Dobrej Nadziei na południu Afryki, Przylądek Leeuwin w południowo-zachodniej Australii i Przylądek Horn, położony na południu kontynentu amerykańskiego.Ten wyścig jest wyjątkowy, ponieważ trwa żeglaże płyną dookoła świata, bez przerwy i bez pomocy.
