8 BIT ART/ CHIPTUNE

How much space does audio works consumes in the field of game design? A bit more than you think. Game industry and electronic music are mutually influential on each other. For this reason, their relationship is actually a lot to cover, and I would specifically like to talk about the aesthetic of "8 Bit" or "Chiptune". 8 Bit/Chiptune is a form of audio that is created by using computer chips, music composition software and producing loops out of retro videogames. We can also explain 8 Bit from a technical aspect: since a bit is one minimal piece of information, it is encoded by using "1" and "0" (Braguinski, 2018) so 8-Bi basically refers to the collection of 8 units. There are a lot of electronic sound artists who are still experimenting with this form of music.

Here is an example of Chiptune:

MUSIC INFLUENCED BY GAME AUDIO

While I was researching on this genre, I came across interviews with sound artists who are influenced by chiptune within their music production. For instance, Dark0, Kai Whiston and Tokimonsta are music producers/artist who stated that they are highly influenced by the video games that they used to play (Mixmag). However, there is also a nostalgic aspect into this: the sounds that we hear from the early video games, of course, are not as professional and high quality as the video games that we see today. They are a bit less realistic, which I think, that's what attracted these artists as well since electronic music is a bit far from the realistic sounds.

Many technological improvements might be influenced by the gaming industry, but it's not on ly the technology that is inspired by the video games; various forms of artworks are also benefit video games for their practices such as 8-Bit/Chiptune and many electromusic genres. On the left, you can see the work of Tokimonsta, which is lnfuenced by the early video games. Also, check out the references to learn more!
