Author's Biography
Sir Colville Young
Sir Colville Young was born in Belize City in November 1932 into a musically prominent family. In 1961 he was awarded an honours degree in English at the University of the West Indies and went on to obtain a PhD from the University of York in 1974. His thesis was a sociolinguistic study of Belizean Creole. Sir Colville has excelled not only in literature (drama, poetry, short story) but also in music, composing the folk-opera Tiger Dead, the cantata Ode to Independence, the Misa Caribeña and numerous songs. He was the founding President of the University College of Belize (now the University of Belize) where he lectured until his appointment as Belize’s second Governor-General in 1993.

Pataki Full: Seven Belizean Short Stories is a collection of short stories that offers first hand insight into the reality of Belizean society, its richness and humour. Each tale is unique in flavour and imbued with Young's wit and satire entwines lifestyles with sociocultural aspects of the period.
Setting
There are different settings in this story.
The story begins in San Jacinto, a town in Belize where most of the people know each other and which is the home of Cristóbal and his wife Isabella. Also the waiting room to get the visa which he describes as a crowded place with people yearning to get the visa. Finally, when he arrives in New York, he describes how he is in awe of the giant advertisements, the stores, the restaurants, and the fast-paced lifestyle.
Plot

- Isabella and Cristobal go to the offices to apply for their visa and wait a long time.
- After a long wait, it is Cristobal's turn, who must go without his wife despite her insistence and unfortunately they deny him the visa

- Isabella explodes with anger and begins to complain to the clerk.
- The clerk tries to calm Isabella down and promises to solve their situation the next day.
- Cristobal was very grateful to his wife for what she did
- Cristobal decides to travel to the United States to say goodbye to his brother despite not having visa.
- Despite not fully agreeing with his husband. Isabella plays an important role in obtaining a visa.
Exposition

- Cristobal receives a telegram: Come quick brother dead funeral July 20.
- His first concern had been that his poor dead brother should not have been kept above ground so long.
Cristobal travels and is amazed by the food and drinks served on the plane. Then he meets again with his brother Alfredo who wrote the letter and after welcoming him he explains how life is in the US for immigrants

Man vs Self
Cristobal has to struggle against himself to get the better of his ideas and fears in order to be able to go to the New World. He does not seem to be afraid but in the inside he is since he mentions he had to pretend confidence before boarding the plane. He also realizes that he needs to change his actions in order to be part of that New World.

Throughout the story, Cristobal has to overcome specific obstacles. For instance when he tries to get his visa. Since he is in an unfamiliar situation, he soon starts imitating the actions of the people around him so he can fit in that New World.
