This gothic painting uses different elements, such as a dark colour pallette, parts of nature, and shading to create a dark shadow cast against the painting. The characters pale skin contrasts with the oxymoronic idea of a dark and light colour scheme.
The representation of butterflies could be a depiction of endurance, change, hope and life. In this context, the impact of the butterfly creates a part of life in the image, alongside the tall tree, winding and tall, and the character. The tree, itself, is tall and wide, intertwining through the leaves and greenery. It is quite a big part of the painting, as it takes up a majority of space. Trees, like butterflies, can be a big representation of life, as they provide the world with oxygen. This can link into the idea of an everlasting portrayal of life and living, through the inclusion of butterflies and trees.
