PLATE TECHTONIC THEORY

THE PLATE TECTONIC THEORY WAS PROPOSED BY ALFRED WEGENER. IT EXPLAINED HOW EARTH WAS BROKEN UP INTO LARGE SCALE PLATES THAT MOVED AROUND THE EARTHS SURFACE. THIS THEY have ALSO HELPED US BETTER UNDERSTAND ABOUT EARTHQUAKES AND VOLCANOES.

KEY EVIDENCE

  • Matching of coastlines
  • Matching fossil evidence on different continents
  • Matching rock layers
  • Geological similarities

Seafloor Spreading

EVIDENCE OF SEAFLOOR SPREADING

Seafloor spreading is a process that occurs at mid-ocean ridges, where new oceanic crust is formed through volcanic activity and then gradually moves away from the ridge. This is how the new crust is formed.

  • Ruptions of molten material
  • Magnetic stripes in the rock of the ocean floor
  • The ages of the rocks
  • The ages of the rocks varied
  • The ages of rocks weren't matching with the surface

JUST LIKE PUZZLE PIECES!!

PLATE BOUNDARIES

There are three different types of plate boundaries. Convergent, divergent, and Transform Boundary. They each have different charesteristis which shape the Earth.

Sources

CONVERGENT

DIVERGENT

  • When two plates collide
  • Intense pressure-formed
  • Three types
  • Mountain Ranges, Subduction Zones, Trenches, Earthquakes, and Volcanic Activity can form
1. Oceanic to Continental: Subduction Zones 2. Oceanic to Oceanic: Oceanic Subduction Zones 3. Continental to Continental: Mountain Ranges
  • When two plate divide
  • Most are underwater
  • Two types
  1. Continent-Continent: Rift Valleys
  2. Ocean-Ocean: Mid-Ocean Ridges

TRANSFORM

  • When two plates slide against each other
  • Dont create or destroy lithosphere
  • Most are on the sea-floor
  • Create faults
